For over 30 years, the Australian String Quartet (ASQ) has created unforgettable chamber music experiences for national and international audiences.

From its home base at the University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, the ASQ reaches out across Australia and the world to engage people with an outstanding program of performances, workshops, commissions and education projects. The ASQ’s new venture, Close Quarters, takes chamber music back to its roots with hour-long concerts designed to encourage audience conversation and engagement.

The emerging artist for this gig is bassist Will Hansen. Will says…” I’ve got a strange obsession with contemporary classical and minimalist music, and the wealth of sounds that it explores. There’s something invigorating about modern music… to see new art being born with your help. Through collaboration, I’ve premiered a number of works spanning a variety of mediums including kooky electronics, prepared bass and even keyboards (Though don’t expect a recital from me soon, sorry!). I compose and play with my ensemble, SPIRAL, which continues to provide performances, while having cheeky laugh along the way… It’s my passion”

Symbioses is a travelling concert series curated by soprano Jane Sheldon. It was launched in Australia in 2014. At each Symbiosis Jane invites two instrumentalists to join her to present music for duo and trio, with a focus on works of the present and of the 20th-century avant-garde.

These hour-long programs are designed to cast a light on the symbiotic nature of chamber music performance: breathing together, thinking together, witnessed at close range by the listeners.

This BackStage Symbioses IV program will feature Jane with guest artists Lamorna Nightingale (flutes) and Bree van Reyk (vibraphone).

The emerging artist for this BackStage gig is Elia Bossard. Elia is a flutist and stage designer whose work is a provocation of the relationship classical music has with the world outside the score and performance conventions….

American cellist Ashley Bathgate has been described as an “eloquent new music interpreter” (New York Times) and “a rising star of her instrument” (Albany Times Union) who combines “bittersweet lyricism along with ferocious chops”(New York Magazine). The desire to create a dynamic energy exchange with her audience and build upon the ensuing chemistry is a pillar of Bathgate’s philosophy. Her affinity to dynamism drives Bathgate to venture into previously uncharted areas of sounds and techniques, breaking the mold of a cello’s traditional voice. Collaborators and fans alike describe her vitality as remarkable and magical. She is a member of the award winning, internationally acclaimed sextet, Bang on a Can All-Stars.

Open the music box...who knows what you might find. the music box project is an exploratory collective of early career composers and performers presenting unique, creative and collaborative musical experiences whilst having plenty of fun along the way. Increasingly recognised as keen collaborators and instigators of creative music making, the ensemble has premiered works of local, national and international emerging composers whilst continuing to reinvent established works in a new light. Kickstarting 2017, the music box project participated in an open workshop/performance with ‘eighth blackbird’ and launched three innovative concert programs/projects in addition to a casual performance residency at the Australian Youth Hotel, Ultimo.

Ensemble Offspring are champions of adventurous new music. Presenting music from seminal chamber work to free improvisation, alongside the creation of striking interdisciplinary productions, the group embraces open-minded music making of all forms. Hatched Academy is Ensemble Offspring's intensive music program designed to provide practical experience to the next generation of innovative young Australian performers and composers.

In their BackStage program Ensemble Offspring veterans Veronique Serret (six-string electric violin) and Claire Edwardes (percussion/artistic director) meet their two 2017 Hatched Academy performers Kieran Welch (viola) and Luke Carbon (clarinet) head on in a program showcasing these 4 stunning musicians as soloists.

Chris Perren – A Missing Moon (Kieran Welch, viola)
Missy Mazzoli – Tooth and Nail (Kieran Welch, viola)
Connor d’Netto – new work (Kieran Welch, viola)
Ivana Radovanovic – October Morning (Veronique Serret, violin)
Sarah Thompson – new work (Claire Edwardes, percussion)
Eve de Castro-Robinson – Undercurrents (Luke Carbon, clarinet)
Chris Perren – Dive Process (percussion, violin, clarinet)

Kieran Welch is a violist, curator, event producer, DJ, teacher and writer. Regularly performing across Australia as part of the indie-chamber septet Nonsemble, Kieran also curates the the Brisbane-based concert series 'Dots+Loops', exploring the spaces in between a classical concert and a club gig.

Luke Carbon is a Melbourne-based clarinet and saxophone player. He has a passion for new music in new places and has played in tunnels, living rooms, alleyways, and stormwater drains. He is the founder of 'Paint it Red’, a Brisbane concert series combining chamber music and improvisation with live visual art and often freestyle graffiti. Luke has appeared with Ensemble Offspring (Hatched Academy 2017), Syzygy Ensemble, Rubiks Collective and ELISION.

As you enter the space experience Ollie Miller's filmic montage memento of the 2016 BackStage gig. This remix reversal sees backstage music re-music-ed, mashed up and reconstituted. Sounds, colours, faces, gestures and grooves rolled about and dipped in primordial musicovisual soup. Who will you see?
