UNBOUND ACCESS OVERVIEW
Access at East Sydney Community and Arts Centre (ESCAC)
Every effort has been made to make Unbound as accessible as possible. Here is a video of the different spaces and access available in the building which also briefly outlines how to access ESCAC by different types of public transport. An access map has also been provided that outlines the different spaces in the ESCAC venue. Please note this access map is unfortunately not accessible to those using a screen reader.
Below is also a visual story of how to journey to the venue, what to expect when you arrive for the Unbound concert, and access information for different areas of the venue.
We have also shared some pre-show notes and sonic stories indicating the sounds you will encounter in each of the pieces as well as visual descriptions of the artists.

GETTING TO ESCAC

ESCAC is located at 34-40 Burton St, Darlinghurst.
The closest station to ESCAC is Museum Station with lift access from all platforms.
ESCAC is approximately a 10-minute walk (650 m) from Museum Station, as shown on the map below.

ESCAC can also be accessed from the 333, 352, 440, M10, 394, 392, 373, 399 and 311 buses on Oxford Street, which is a three-minute walk (190m) .
Please note you’ll need to walk down a steep hill to access ESCAC from Oxford Street.

ESCAC can also be accessed by the 389 Bus with stops on Bourke or Burton Streets, an approximately two-minute walk (150 m) from ESCAC. This route runs between Bondi Junction and Pyrmont.

There are two accessible parking spaces with a 4-hour limit available between 8am and 10pm directly outside the main entrance to ESCAC on Burton Street.
These are parallel parking spaces which are 3.2m wide and 19.5m long. There is also limited 2-hour on-street parking.

There are also 5 accessible parking spaces located at 301 Forbes Street, approximately 300m from ESCAC.
WHAT TO EXPECT ONCE AT ESCAC AND VENUE ACCESS

ESCAC has step-free access via the entrance on Burton Street. You will enter ESCAC via a large sliding glass door measuring 1.6 meters wide and 3.5 meters high at the front of the building.

Doors will open to the venue at 7pm (or should we have a tactile tour beforehand - BRAND X usually does this) to allow you to get settled in for the concert and find a seat. The performance will have a relaxed start and begin at approximately 7:30pm.
A member of BackStage or Brand X Staff will be waiting at the front door of ESCAC to check your ticket and welcome you to the Unbound concert. If it is busy, there may be a queue of people.
Assistance Animals are welcome at ESCAC and drinking water is available.

ESCAC backs directly on to Albert Sloss Reserve, a ramp-accessible nature reserve which can be used as a relief space for assistance animals.
Albert Sloss reserve can be accessed via ramp from Palmer St.

If you need the bathroom there is one gender neutral accessible bathroom located between the foyer and the rehearsal and performance space, opposite the lift entrance.
This is a single stall bathroom with a right-hand transfer. This bathroom has a toilet, a shower, a sanitary bin and a baby change table.
Stairs to lower floor and Bathrooms
There are also more toilets located on the lower ground floor which are accessible via lift or via a set of approximately 15 stairs with non-slip nosing and handrails opposite ESCAC’s main entrance. These toilets are not accessible.

To access the performance space where the concert is taking place you can walk up a set of eight steps to the upper level of ESCAC and turn left. These steps have a hand rail and non-slip nosing.
Alternatively you can take the lift which is situated to the left of the main entrance to the upper level. When exiting the lift on the upper level, the performance space will be directly to your left.

The lift is 1.3 metres wide and 1.7 metres deep and weighted at 1000kgs provides access to all floors of ESCAC. The lift doorway is 90 cm wide.

The Unbound concert will take place in the performance space at ESCAC which is a large rectangular space with a mirror and lighting rig at one end and windows along the side which can be blocked with blackout curtains.
The performance space has step-free access and is wheelchair accessible through large double doors. These doors measure 1.7 meters wide and 1.9 meters high and open outwards towards the foyer.
Visual signage will be available to signpost the different areas in the space.
ESCAC does not have a hearing loop and is not able to provide hearing support for this concert.
Audio Description will not be provided as part of this performance.
Flexible Seating will be provided as part of this concert.
In the concert, the pieces will be performed in the order on the program.
The concert will use low lighting throughout and specific works may use lighting that may be uncomfortable to audience members with sensory sensitivities.

If you need a break at any time, there is a quiet space available in the ESCAC meeting room off to the back right of the foyer.
The doors to the performance space will be left open to allow audience members to move freely in and out of the space throughout the concert.
The concert will end at approximately 9:30pm but feel free to stay and chat after the concert finishes!
A few weeks after the performance An On-demand Video Recording of the performance will be provided online for audience members.
Bespoke closed Captions will be provided on the recorded version of this concert.

ARTIST DESCRIPTIONS

Ria Andriani (she/her) is a writer and musician in her early 30s. She is of Asian heritage and has tan skin. She has silky, straight dark hair, parted on the left and falling to just below her shoulder length. She of average height and build. Ria is a singer who will perform Molly Joyce’s Conform and Reform.
Mel Eden (she/her) is in her late 30s , of slim build and approximately 163cm in hieght. She has short brown wavy hair with a few grey strands and will be playing the piano accordion and singing.
Jim Denley (he/him) is 68 years old. He is 5’7”, has long grey somewhat curly hair and an olive complexion. He will be playing flutes and alto saxophone.
Lamorna Nightingale (she/her) is a musician in her early fifties. She is of medium height and build, with pale white skin. She wears bright colours complimented by stylish and bold glasses, round with red frames. She plays the flute in Molly Joyce’s Conform and Reform and will introduce the program.
Claire Edwardes (she/her) is a percussionist in her early fifties. She is of average height and medium build, with olive skin and brown hair worn short in a funky asymmetrical haircut. She wears round black framed glasses and colourful clothes. She plays the vibraphone in Molly Joyce’s piece Conform and Reform. (Molly Joyce will not be present in person for the performance of this work and so has not been described in these notes.)
Jason Noble (he/him) is a musician in his early fifties, of average height and an athletic build. He has white skin and has short brown hair, slightly receding with grey highlights. His short, well-trimmed beard is also flecked with grey. He plays the clarinet in Molly Joyce’s Conform and Reform.
