Ashley Bathgate

American cellist Ashley Bathgate has been described as an “eloquent new music interpreter” (New York Times) and “a rising star of her instrument” (Albany Times Union) who combines “bittersweet lyricism along with ferocious chops”(New York Magazine). The desire to create a dynamic energy exchange with her audience and build upon the ensuing chemistry is a pillar of Bathgate’s philosophy. Her affinity to dynamism drives Bathgate to venture into previously uncharted areas of sounds and techniques, breaking the mold of a cello’s traditional voice. Collaborators and fans alike describe her vitality as remarkable and magical. She is a member of the award winning, internationally acclaimed sextet, Bang on a Can All-Stars.

the music box project

Open the music box...who knows what you might find. the music box project is an exploratory collective of early career composers and performers presenting unique, creative and collaborative musical experiences whilst having plenty of fun along the way. Increasingly recognised as keen collaborators and instigators of creative music making, the ensemble has premiered works of local, national and international emerging composers whilst continuing to reinvent established works in a new light. Kickstarting 2017, the music box project participated in an open workshop/performance with ‘eighth blackbird’ and launched three innovative concert programs/projects in addition to a casual performance residency at the Australian Youth Hotel, Ultimo.
