OCTOBER 13: Symbioses IV + Elia Bosshard

Screen Shot 2017-06-14 at 3.21.24 pm.png

Symbioses is a travelling concert series curated by soprano Jane Sheldon. These hour-long programs are designed to cast a light on the symbiotic nature of chamber music performance: breathing together, thinking together, witnessed at close range by the listeners. This BackStage Symbioses program will feature Jane with guest artists Lamorna Nightingale (flutes) and Bree van Reyk (vibraphone). Opening the night, flutist and designer Elia Bosshard presents her newly created performance-installation ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’. This work is a study of performer-audience relationships and sonic perception, set up within a potentially overwhelming, dizzying environment and will feature 5 flutists Elia Bosshard, Naomi Johnson, Shaun Barlow, Laura van Rijn and Jessica Scott.

Symbioses is a travelling concert series curated by soprano Jane Sheldon. It was launched in Australia in 2014. At each Symbiosis Jane invites two instrumentalists to join her to present music for duo and trio, with a focus on works of the present and of the 20th-century avant-garde. These hour-long programs are designed to cast a light on the symbiotic nature of chamber music performance: breathing together, thinking together, witnessed at close range by the listeners. This BackStage Symbioses IV program will feature Jane with guest artists Lamorna Nightingale (flutes) and Bree van Reyk (vibraphone).

Elia Bosshard

Elia Bosshard is a flutist and stage designer. Her work is a provocation of the relationship classical music has with the world outside the score and performance conventions. She uses abstract, visual frameworks to engage the audience in the ephemerality and existence of sound, offering a narrative-neutral listening space that resonates with select music works. Elia’s work is often site-specific in active spaces, drawing on particular environments to inform the work’s concept and design, and to encourage unique, transient audience communities to form within the performance arena.
